An exciting encounter between two great teams

On the morning of the 23rd February 2014 Wrexham Under 8s took on a strong Mold U8s. The games took place under difficult conditions with fairly high winds present throughout the matchs.

A total of four games were played with Wrexham outscoring Mold 24-22.

A slow start initially was soon superseded by an strong performance overall. Every player played well and there was some excellent attacking options. Mold were attacking strongly from the start and found themselves in control of the early stages. However an excellent Wrexham defence drove Mold back and held them at bay enabling scores from Will and Daryn to bring Wrexham back into the game. This was not to be the end of the excitement as every player on the pitch made excellent progress and some excellent turns to cause the Mold defense some major problems. In the end it all came down to a dropped ball making the difference. A Mold player snatched the ball from the ground and proceeded to score the winner.

If the first game was a great game then the second must be regarded as a classic. Every player on the team was switched on and raring to go. The defensive line of Wrexham held Mold out on several occasions to ensure that quite early on thanks to mistakes and Wrexhams desire to win that we were 3-1 up. Mold began to up their game and Wrexham managed to turn over the ball after 6 tags on their own line. A few minutes later the same situation presented itself and Wrexham again managed to keep Mold out, a knock on as the ball was grounded proving a decisive factor. It also setup the best piece of rugby that Wrexham U8s have shown to date. With the scores at 4-3 it was possible for Mold to tie the game, however this was not to be Molds day.

We restarted after Molds 3rd try and Max passed to Daryn, Daryn was tagged and passed to Rhys, who passed to Gabrielle. Gabrielle passed to Max after being tagged before passing to Daryn who weaved through the Mold defense and looked to be on for his 3rd try of the day, he was unlucky in that he was tagged but he passed left to a fantastic supporting run from Iwan who went over to score the 5th of the game.

Team 2 played some excellent rugby. The key to their success was excellent support play and direct running. This was led from the front by Josh whose support play and running was quite superb and quite rightly resulted in the being awarded the man of the match award for this week.

However, this was a good all round team performance and although Josh was singled out, the award could quite easily have gone to a number of players on any other day. Special mention to Tyler, Diego and Gabrielle for good solid performances after short breaks. Keep it up boys.
