Thumping win for Wrexham 2s

Report by Keir Harding

Writing match reports for an 80 - 0 hammering is pretty tricky. Enjoy.

Playing second team rugby in North Wales can be a baffling and bewildering experience. 3 weeks ago Wrexham blew into a stormy Bala and eeked out a win with 13 players and no front row. This week Wrexham seconds entertained Flint seconds at home and fielded a squad of 20 including 5 front row. There was a range of experience in the Wrexham team with toddler Will Smith stepping up from youth to play his first senior game, while veterans Guy Bingham and Kerry powell returned from their sabbaticals in Llangollen to add a mix of sage wisdom, wrecking ball style scrummaging bone rattling tackles.
In the heavy wind Wrexham kicked to Flint for what proved to be Wrexham’s only restart of the game. Despite the first team playing the same day Wrexham’s squad was bursting with rare quality that Flint found overwhelming. In the backs James Price always seemed to have time on the ball and when he wasn’t making breaks himself, he unleashed Jack O’Donnell and Blake Turner to devastating effect. At full back Adam Jones amazed everyone with his phenomenal dummy kick and his appalling actual kick, going on to claim a rare try under the posts. Daniel Lloyd showed some beautiful hands to keep moves going and Jake Thomas was always in the right spot to support.
In the pack anthony westgarth returned from his long exile to add power around the pitch while Jake Edwards danced and pounded his way through the Flint defence like the 20 stone ballerina that he is. Last years player of the year Liam Hutchinson also made his return and fell into his old form immediately. Shane Kahn astounded the crowd by remaining on the pitch without being carded. Keir Harding had to leave the pitch with a broken heart after making a pass and realising that he didn’t need to.
The Wrexham tries came thick and fast with hat tricks for James Price, Blake Turner and Kerry powell. Other scorers included Jack O’Donnell and Adam Jones.
While Wrexham enjoyed the day it was a difficult time for Flint who stuck at it for thefull 80 minutes. They had some great moments but however good the break or solid the defence, it never seemed enough to hold Wrexham at bay for long. Despite this they were gentlemen to play against and we look forward to our trip to theirs.
Wrexham captain Danny Guy stated he was ashamed of the 80 point win and spent 20 minutes with each player talking them through what they could have done better, not stopping until many of them were in tears. Next week Wrexham will be astounded if anything like todays squad makes it to Bethesda, where they will be hoping for their 4th league win. Barry Lewis on the sideline said “I’m not director of rugby anymore so I don’t really give a toss”.
